Kita Wines owned by Tara Gomez
Stories like Tara’s inspire all of us to push ourselves further and to uplift underrepresented voices in the wine industry. She fell in love with wine as a child running through the rows of grapes. Eventually, Tara pursued her passion and studied enology at a university in California; she was 1 of only 2 women who graduated with a BSc in 1998. After that, she would go on to work at J. Lohr for nearly a decade. If anyone knows her stuff, it’s Tara.
While we love her story, the wines she creates are just as engaging. She blends old-world wine techniques with new traditions to create flavourful and complex wines that we can’t get enough of. Our favorite one to drink is a bottle of the T'aya. The name translates to “Abalone Shell” in the native Chumash language of Samala. This Rhône style blend has fruity aromatics and a rich flavor you’ll savor in every sip.
Stuyvesant Champagne own by Marvina Robinson
Marvina’s love for wine started where it does for many of us: College. She and her friends used to buy their favorite bubble from a local liquor store and sip it in their plastic cups. Eventually, that inspired her to create her own wine brand, and we’re so glad! Named after her hometown of Bedford-Stuyvesant, her champagne brand is one of the few owned by an African-American woman.
We love to drink her bubbly wines as their effervescent and light. The Grand Reserve Brut has a lovely floral bouquet that captures the scent of fresh flowers we love. On the mouth, you’ll also felt a little kick with notes of gingerbread and apple. It’s a lovely sparkling wine that’s perfect for any kind of toast!
Quinta da Plansel owned by Dorina Lindemann
The story of Quinta da Plansel is a fascinating one. It starts with Dorina’s father. H.J. Bôhm, who goes by Jorge, was the son of a wine family in Germany. He was off on an adventure when his sailboat sank near Lisbon, which forced him to stay in Portugal. After that, he simply fell in love with the country and its wine. In 1975, he purchased a property that would eventually go on to become Quinta da Plansel. Now, Dorina and her daughters are carrying on their family traditions of wine, and with great success!
We love her Touringa Nacional, made 100% of the Touriga Nacional varietal. This bold red wine was the first of its kind and shows a great appreciation of Portuguese grapes. On the nose, you’ll notice delightful aromas like fig, orange blossom, and plum. The body and mouth-feel are also fantastic thanks to its time spent in oak.
Theopolis Vineyards owned by Theodora Lee
Back in 2003, Theodora founded her very own winery despite having a job as a corporate lawyer. She was inspired by her law firm mentors who owned wineries; she was surrounded by fellow wine connoisseurs. Now, she’s been featured in tons of magazines, including Forbes. In the wine world, she’s known as the Queen of the Vineyards, and we can see why.
We’re thrilled with the Petite Sirah and love the big, bold taste. It has a silky-smooth feeling that showcases the elegance only fit for a queen. There are also some hints of blueberry, tobacco, and black tea. Drink it now, or save it for a few decades to really savor it.
Ceja Vineyards owned by Amelia Ceja
When Amelia’s parents immigrated to the United States, they worked in the vineyards. Their bustling family was often found playing and working at the wineries on the weekends. Eventually, Amelia would marry her husband Pedro, and together they would buy several acres to start their own winery. Now, generations of the Ceja family have worked together developing refined and delicious wines for everyone to enjoy.
We can’t recommend their Pinot Noir enough! The Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir has scrumptious notes of plum, cold, and earthy berries. It’s herbal and fruit making it a complex glass of wine. Not only do we enjoy the rich flavor, but we also love the smooth feeling left on our palates. You can really taste the hard work and elegance in every sip. ¡Salud!
