Wines From Michigan You Need To Try

This past September, we went from Chicago to the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail to check out their wines. This famous wine trail now has over 15 different wineries located in the area, with everything from small-batch bottles to large-scale wine productions.

Because of the cool breeze coming off Lake Michigan, the climate is just right for growing wine grapes. In fact, the region contains over 90% of Michigan wineries. While there are over 50 different grape varieties grown in the state, the region is most well known for growing the Concord Grape and Chambourcin.

On our trip, we stopped by 3 lovely wineries and had to share them with you. If you’re driving through Michigan, make sure to stop by for a quick glass and tell them we said hi!

  1.  CODY Kresta Vineyard and Winery

When we arrived at this small, family-owned winery, we were greeted by the Vineyard dog, the owner, and a beautiful garden. After the warm welcome, we enjoyed a stunning bottle of Mystique Red.

The Mystique Red is a smooth blend of Syrah (55%) and Chambourcin (45%). The dark, full-bodied wine had notes of black fruits, like cherry and blackberry. And if you’re looking for something to pair it with, the hint of spice goes well with the charcuterie board we had. While they don’t have a full menu, they do still host plenty of catered events.

As we ate, the winemaker, David, also visited our table and answered our questions about the history of the winery.

After we enjoyed our wine, we took a walk around the spacious property and took in the vineyard’s views.

Of course, before we left we had to look at the gift shop. If you’re hoping for cute, wine-related accessories, then definitely give it a look before you leave. Also be sure to check out their website for upcoming events.

  1. Lawton Ridge Winery

Michigan

Started back in 1974 by a group of friends from Western Michigan University, the group decided to plant their own French-hybrid grapes on an old peach orchard. While they were initially used for home brewing, the grapes are now grown to produce the Lawton Ridge Winery wines.

After we walked into the cozy winery, we sat at the counter and had a wine tasting with the cheese platter. The small winery has a quaint charm that makes you feel right at home.

We sampled a variety of wines before picking out the ones we loved. First, we enjoyed their Lake Effect (and even purchased a bottle to take home). The white blend semi-dry wine had a bright and crisp flavor, similar to that of a Sauvignon Blanc.

Another interesting wine was their Sparkling Semi-Sweet Riesling. Neither of us had tried a Sparkling Riesling before, but this one was a delight. The hints of grapefruit and stonefruit left a lovely finish and would pair perfectly with a spicy meal.

It may be tucked away, but don’t let the casual atmosphere fool you. If you are looking for great customer service and the opportunity to learn more about wine, this small winery is definitely worth a visit.

  1. Round Barn Estate

Finally, we had one more stop. A winery, distiller, and brewery—all in one. If you’re traveling with a diverse group, then there is definitely something here for everyone here.

As we headed back to Chicago, we stopped by Round Barn Estate for one final glass of wine and dinner. The winery is both kid and pet-friendly, with plenty of open space for them to enjoy (and run off their energy).

Every weekend, from Memorial Day to Halloween, you can stop by and enjoy the music from the live band that plays regularly. Since tourists and locals alike love to visit, it can get pretty busy. So, we definitely suggest you make a reservation.

The Chardonnay I drank had a toasty oak note with tropical flavor shining through. The wine had a light body, fine balance, and crisp finish. The Lobster Roll we had was just okay—but the real highlight was the ambience.

When you’re there, you can’t miss the beautiful cabanas for special events, like birthdays and weddings. Opportunities to walk the vineyard are plentiful and worth the adventure.

We even had the joy of meeting the winemaker who offered to take our picture!

And if you really want a workout, there’s plenty of hiking trails near the property.  Put on your boots and grab a warm jacket before taking on Mt. Tabor Trails. The best part? You can even bring your beverages with you.

One last tip: Uber and Lyft are not allowed on their property so make sure you have a designated driver!

And that’s a wrap!

We loved scoping out these Michigan wineries and look forward to the bottles we brought home. Don’t forget to follow our blog for wine tips & recommendations! Cheers!
